IBM: PC Era Has Ended

Growing PC (personal computer) can not be separated from the role of IBM who first created it in the early 1980's. Not just in the office, PC was present in the corners of the house. However, over the times in which people no longer work in one place but have a high mobility, the PC is no longer relevant.

One of the engineers who designed the original IBM PC, Mark Dean, said in his blog that the PC era has ended. Dean argues that now is the time for post-PC era. In the evening the anniversary of the IBM PC-30 on August 12, 2011, he expressly stated that the PC era has ended and that the next technology will be more effective. In a sense, man is no longer dependent on the box that stay in one place, but people can be more productive with mobile devices.

Dean is one of the 12 person engineering team that designed the IBM personal computer was the first machine in 1981. Currently he serves the CTO (chief techology officer) IBM for the Middle East and Africa. Two days before the celebration of 30 years of IBM PC, Dean wrote in his blog that the PC is being replaced not by a new type of device, but by a device with a new role, where smartphones and tablet may be the most powerful innovations that impact to the economy and public life.

He explained that the innovation developed in which people and ideas meet and interact through the computation. Computing is no longer talk of a box that helps the job, but also innovations that could connect people at a time can complete their work anytime anywhere. This experience can not be obtained if people still rely on the PC on the table.

Dean also writes on his blog that he had also personally been using mobile devices and leave the PC. Even today the main computer is a tablet. When designing a PC 30 years ago, he never thought that the PC will experience a period of decline as current needs. He even thought there was a time the PC will meet the same fate with a typewriter, cassettes, diskettes, and incandescent light bulbs.

"I have personally left the PC. My main computer is now a tablet. When I helped design a PC, I do not think feel the decline. Although the PC will be more widely used, they are no longer supporting the main computing. They will kinship with vacuum tubes, typewriter, tapes, floppy disks, CRT, and incandescent light bulbs, "he said.

Jason Hiner, from TechRepublic, responding to Dean's statement that people who are proficient with a PC can feel the limitations and disappointed with the experience of tablets. However, he added, executives like Dean who spent the entire day to meet people and rarely make the document itself, are the ones who do need a tablet.

According to Hiner, PC is the future of its chips will be embedded in smartphones and tablets for use in moving and traveling, but can also be used with a mouse, keyboard, and large screen when the user needs to sit at the table and doing creative work. When reality comes in a large scale, then he is ready to say that the post-PC era has arrived.

IBM alone since 2005 has been out of the PC business by selling personal division computingnya famous Thinkpad brand to Lenovo of China. IBM is now focused on business software and services for businesses and corporations from servers, services, and solutions. However, IBM is supplying the processor technology that is famous for its Power technology for a variety of consumer devices such as the processor for the Play Station 3.

Currently IBM is also establishing research cooperation with Samsung, Korea. The two companies are working to combine the strengths of each processor technology to produce a powerful processor but low cost.
